OUR HEARTS ARE BROKEN....

[Obituary published in the Redding Record-Searchlight, Delano Record, and the East Valley Tribune (Mesa) newspapers on September 14, 2007]:

Monte "Joe" Montgomery, 80, beloved husband, father of two, grandfather to two, and great-grandfather to four, passed away on September 11, 2007 at the Northside Hospital in Cumming, GA, surrounded by family. He died peacefully after a long struggle with Alzheimers, diabetes, and congestive heart failure.

He was greatly loved by all who knew him.

Joe was born on October 7, 1926 in Drumright, OK to Opal June [Elliott] Montgomery and Joseph Franklin Montgomery. He grew up in western Oklahoma and graduated from Berlin High School in 1944. Joe served proudly and with honor in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a medic from 1945-1947, and in 1946, married Emma Jean Barclay in Tryon, OK. Shortly after his discharge from military service, they moved to California where they stayed until 2003, when they moved to Mesa, AZ to be closer to their daughter. All three recently moved to Sugar Hill, GA to be closer to his son, Stephen, and his family.

Joe had a distinguished and enjoyable career as a merchant with JC Penney from 1947-1987, managing two stores in California. He was a member of the Velda Rose First United Methodist Church in Mesa, AZ, a member of the Las Palmas VFW chapter in Mesa, and a long-time and honored member of Rotary. Joe also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing golf, and traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean; his son, Stephen, and daughter-in-law, Sherry; and his daughter, Marilyn, all of Sugar Hill, GA; his grandson Adam, his wife Jennie, and their son Jack, of Alpharetta, GA; and by his grand-daughter, Erin McGriff, her husband, John, and their three children, Madelynn, Megan, and Noah Joe, of Braselton, GA. In addition, he is also survived by his brothers Sam and George, both of California, his sister Donna Horsley, also in California, his brother Jim in Oklahoma, and countless other dear friends and family members.

The family would like to give special thanks to Northside Hospital for the extraordinary care they gave Joe during his stay with them.

Memorial services will be held at the Flanigan Funeral Home at 4400 S Lee St, Buford, GA on September 15, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. Following the service, his ashes will be interred at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens, 5979 New Bethany Rd, Buford, GA.
