Derret Hubbard Barclay
(1812-1900)

barclay_darret_hubbard.jpg Derret Hubbard Barclay was the 5th of thirteen children born to Robert Barclay and Mary Hubbard. He was born in Boonslick Township, Howard County, MO in 1812.

The photo at right was provided by one of our cousins, James Lloyd Little. The first name on the photo appears as "Darret", but we believe the correct spelling was actually "Derret". Some researchers have also found evidence that he was known as "Durrett".

We're not quite sure if he's wearing a fancy, feathered collar or he's wearing a beard that is shaved off the face...very interesting!

Sadly, we have no personal information about Derret's life except for the statistical information taken from Census records and the writings of three wonderful researchers -- William "Harley" Barclay, Wilma Breedlove, and Homer Hill -- all descendants of Derret Barclay.

For instance, in 1986, Harley wrote:

"Military Record:
Enlisted May 8, 1847 (at 35 years of age) Discharged October 18, 1848

Service Record:
Mexican War, 2nd engagement Missouri Mounted Volunteers, Company "K" 3rd Regiment under Captain Benjamin Smithton. Engaged in battles as far south as Monterrey, Saltido, and Buena Vista. Discharged because of end of Mexican wars. Received a pension of $8 per month from 1858-1860, stopped, then reinstated in 1887.

He then made re-application at age 75, and received the same amount until his death. His wife, Lucretia Davidson then applied and received the same amount until her death in 1904.

....Apparently, Barclay did not write, or preferred to have his "X" mark made on all legal papers. However, his ability to barter and calculate is quite well known.
.....Place[s] of abode: around Columbia, Mo. (Boone Co) Buffalo, Mo. Elkland, Mo. Charity, Mo., ..."

We found this wonderful old photo (at right) on the Barclay Bastion website. It's a photo of one of Derret's younger brothers, David D. Barclay (b. 1818, d. 1900). It appears to have been taken sometime in the late 1800s, probably between 1885 and 1900.

David had two spouses -- Charlotte Ray Ellender (b.?, d.?) and Tabitha "Betha" Stites (b. 1823, d.?). He and Charlotte had no children that we know of, but he and Betha had eight children, including a son named Thomas Montgomery Barclay!

Hmmmmm.....

daniel_h_barclay_and_wife_christina_smith_barclay.jpg Also on the Barclay Bastion website, we found the photo (on the left) of David's oldest son (Derret's nephew), Daniel H. Barclay and his wife Christina (Smith) Barclay.

Daniel & Christina had three children, but sadly, they died young. Daniel died when he was only 30, and Christina at the age of 33.
On the right is another photo we found on the Barclay Bastion website. It's another of Derret's younger brothers -- James Eusibius Barclay (b. 1807, d. 1868)

On April 15th, 1841, Derret married
Lucretia Davidson
in Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri.

Lucretia Davidson (aka Lucrecia Davison)
was the 4th of fourteen children born to
Brackett Davidson and Delilah Hardison.

She was born in Boonslick Township,
Howard County, MO on July 23, 1823.

You can learn more about the Davidson/Davison and Hardison lines by visiting the Barclay Bastion website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~barclay/Tree.htm

george_e_barclay_and_john_milton_barclay_and_lucy_ann_barclay_davison.jpg The photo at left was also found on the Barclay Bastion website.
It is of (l.to r.) George Eusibius Barclay, and John Milton Barclay
(both sons of Derret & Lucretia Barclay),
and their cousin Lucy Ann (Barclay) Davison
(daughter of Robert & Mary (Hubbard) Barclay).

sylvester_and_siblings.jpg The photo on the left is of four of Derret & Lucretia's children.
We don't know for sure, but we believe it was taken sometime in the late 1920s in Oklahoma.
Again, we don't know for sure, but we believe it is a picture of
(standing l. to r.) John Milton Barclay, Rebecca Phoebe Emmeline (Barclay) Greenberg,
(seated l. to r.) Noah Sterling "Uncle Doc" Barclay, and Sylvester "Bess" Kellogg Barclay.

In 1997, Wilma Breedlove, a cousin and researcher in Washington state, submitted her research records to the LDS' genealogical database. In those records, she wrote that Derret died of apoplexy in Dallas County, Missouri in 1900.

However, in 1999, another cousin who researched this line, Homer Hill, reports that Derret actually died in Elkland, Webster, MO -- not in Dallas County, MO.

Both Derret and Lucretia are buried at the Atteberry Shed Cemetery in Dallas County, Missouri, where these pictures were taken in 1999 by cousins Terry Davison and Nadine Ford of California.
